London, UK — 17 April 2026 — UK-based travel presenter and storyteller Mark Edwards has been awarded Television Broadcast of the Year at the Inspire Global Media Awards 2026 for his short film ‘Welcome to Sri Lanka’ capturing the culture, people and natural heritage of Sri Lanka.
The award was announced at an event attended by leading figures from across the travel media industry, recognising storytelling that not only inspires and informs but also demonstrates the societal impact of a destination. Edwards was shortlisted alongside broadcaster Ash Bhardwaj and presenter Alex Outhwaite, with the final selection made against criteria set by Inspire Global founder Byron Shirto.
Filmed on location across Sri Lanka, the broadcast focuses on authentic, unscripted experiences that place the viewer directly within the moment. Rather than staged demonstrations, the film captures real interactions, from participating in traditional rituals to spontaneous encounters with local communities, offering a more human and immersive perspective on Sri Lanka.
Among the standout moments are a visit to Thiruketheeswaram Kovil, where Edwards joined locals in the temple springs, and a meditation session at Ridi Vihare Cave Temple. The film also includes a batik-making experience at Malabar Hills, a wildlife and conservation visit to Jetwing Vil Uyana, an interview at Thiruketheeswaram Kovil, and a mask-making workshop at Galle Fort, presenting aspects of Sri Lanka’s cultural practices, biodiversity, and traditional crafts.
The project was created in collaboration with photojournalist and filmmaker Juliet Coombe, with a shared focus on uncovering lesser-known stories that reflect the depth and diversity of the destination.
“This film was about capturing real moments of connection, the kind you cannot script,” said Edwards. “It’s about placing the viewer inside the experience and showing the true spirit of a destination.”
Sarangi Thilakasena, Deputy Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau comments: “This remarkable victory is a testament to how compelling storytelling can breathe life to destinations showcasing powerful, authentic human experiences. The award-winning film shines a global spotlight on Sri Lanka – beautifully capturing its extraordinary people, rich cultural traditions, breathtaking beauty, diversity, and unforgettable moments of genuine connections. Through Mark’s lens, the world is invited to experience the island not just as a destination, but as a living, breathing story filled with warmth, wonder, and discovery. This makes Sri Lanka truly a unique destination, full of unforgettable memories.”
The award follows Edwards’ recent recognition as Travel Photographer of the Year (People’s Choice), also for work captured in Sri Lanka, marking a significant milestone in his career as a travel presenter and storyteller. Inspired by figures such as Simon Reeve and Paul Theroux, Edwards continues to focus on creating immersive narratives that combine adventure, culture and human connection.
Filming was supported by a network of local partners, including the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, alongside regional guides, artists and conservation experts.
